Spring Membership meeting
March 21, 2010LeGrand Park Cabin
Our spring meeting was held at LeGrand with a potluck dinner at 1:00 p.m.
There were 30 members present. The meeting was started with a welcome to members and a thank you to Larry & LaVonne Parks and Paul & Cathy Calkins, our hosts. The hall was decorated with an Easter theme.
In the reading of the minutes from the Fall Membership meeting, a correction was brought to our attention that Craig & Patty Moon are co-hosts with Nick and Toni Burnett for the May Drive. Motion to then accept the minutes was made by Fred Bridges and seconded by Warren Johnson.
Treasurer’s report: As of March 17, 2010 Savings $1592.68 and checking $376.62. Motion to accept by Denny Kaisand and seconded by Carl Eggermont
Our new historian will by Amy Galloway. It was asked that any cards, letters etc., be given to her. The historian books will need to be given to Amy.
Regarding directories, Carol advised that she only printed paper directories for those who had replied to the email asking that if they wanted a paper directory vs reading online to let her know, and for those that do not have internet. If anyone wants a directory that did not get one, let her know and she could print some more.
Website: Minutes are now on the website. Pictures are also needed to keep the site updated. Carol advised that she can not seem to get the newsletter readable on the website. Linda Spain brought up for discussion that she believed the newsletter should not be on the website. She felt that it should be more of a special item for members only. Motion made by LaVonne Parks and seconded by Julie Sibert, and passed to not put the newsletter on the website.
Horse Fair: Request for volunteers to bring vehicles. Those bringing vehicles are Fred & Cindy Bridges (surrey), Nick & Toni Burnett(Fun Buggy), Denny & Carol Kaisand(Draft cart, sleigh), Larry & Lavonne Parks (Mini Dr Buggy), Julie Sibert(pony wagon), Al & Connie Newmann(?). Linda Spain also advised she had asked Dennis Crowley to do a harnessing demo in the round pen on behalf of the Horse Council, due to the canceling of another person. Volunteers: Warren (Sat), Max(Fri), Carl & Becky(Sat), Phil(Fri), Al(Fri), Larry & LaVonne(on call), Fred (Sun), Carol & Kala (Sat & Sun).
Deceased members plaque: Since the current one is full, the board voted to purchase another one so that the tradition can be carried on. Max advised that the cost will be around $125.00.
The board tried to brainstorm some activities for winter. Nick discussed an outing to an Amish harness shop, a place that builds carts, have a colt breaking demo, driving clinician, or perhaps do something with another club. It was decided that this would be discussed at the drives or the fall meeting. Anyone with ideas, let a board member know.
There are 2 signs available for purchase. These were made several years ago, to fasten on the back of your vehicle. They are $6.00 each.
Two items to add to your schedule of events: The August drive will be hosted by Fred & Cindy Bridges on August 29th. Warren & Beverly Johnson will have a potluck/pool party August 8th.
Linda Spain informed us of the opportunity for people to donate to the Iowa Horse Council for the Iowa Horse Fair. A bronze sponsorship is $150.00. It was motioned by Warren Johnson and seconded by Sandy McKee to donate $150.00 to the Iowa Horse Council. Passed.
Several members brought items for the silent auction. The auction netted $121.50. Some members donated money to bring the total up to $152.00.
A get well card for Phil Duey was passed around for everyone to sign. He recently had surgery and is doing well.
Motion to adjourn made by Denny Kaisand, Seconded by Larry Parks.
Fall Membership Meeting November 8, 2009
The fall membership meeting was hosted by David & Alicia Troen at the Kellogg Grange. A wonderful potluck dinner was enjoyed by 23 members.
The meeting was brought to order by President Max Worthington. Minutes from the Spring 2009 meeting were read. Motion to accept minutes was made by Linda Spain and 2nd by Warren Johnson. Treasurer’s report: Checking $281.04 and Savings $1591.98 with $90.00 for 4 ads and 1 membership yet to be deposited that had been received this week in the mail. Phil Duey motioned to accept and Carl Eggermont 2nd
Carol asked membership for pictures for the website. We cannot keep it updated if we don’t receive new pictures. She also asked if the members who can view the directory online would rather not receive a paper copy. This would help on printing and postage costs. It was discussed that this had been brought before the membership before, but the website did not have everything updated and did not include everything that was in the directory. Carol advised that she would keep the website as current as possible and would ask everyone to let her know by which means they would like to receive their directory. It was also discussed that Linda now has the directory so that she can send it via email. Having the directory and newsletter available on line will save considerable amounts in postage and printing. It was motioned by Phil Duey and seconded by Warren Johnson to let members choose if they want electronic or paper. Passed. Carol will send emails and letters to all members asking for their choice.
Drives for 2010 have been set as follows: May at Rhodes, hosts Tom & Mary Lou Speas and Nick & Toni Burnett, June at St. Charles host Linda Spain, July from Collins to Maxwell hosted by Nick & Toni Burnett, August TBA, September TBA asking Hilary Butler & Al Garcia, October either Bennington Bridge or Rhodes hosted by Max and Donna Worthington.

Fall November meeting will be at the Kellogg Grange hosted by David & Alicia Troen. Date TBA. Warren Johnson motioned and Carl Eggermont 2nd to donate $50.00 to the City of Rhodes for opening the trail and restrooms for our drives there. Passed. A check will be sent to the City of Rhodes and ask them to use it toward their Community Center.
Elections. Three terms are expiring for 2010. They are Carol Kaisand, Julie Sibert and Warren Johnson. Warren advised that he will not accept a nomination. Nominations opened. Warren Johnson nominated Linda Spain, and was 2nd by Nick Burnett. Nick Burnett motioned that Carol Kaisand and Julie Sibert be reelected and was 2nd by Linda Spain. Ted Gentosi motioned that nominations cease and was 2nd by Phil Duey. A motion was then made by Phil Duey and 2nd by Warren Johnson that meeting adjourn. Passed.

Terms end as follows: Max W 2011, Phil 2011, Carol 2012, Nick 2011, Linda 2012 and Julie 2012. The board set up two meetings both to be held at Grandma Max’s in Altoona. Confirmation of some of the dates for drives and meetings have been obtained. May TBA, June 13th Linda Spain, July 18th Nick & Toni Burnett, August TBA, September 19th Hilary Butler, October 17 Max & Donna Worthington. Christmas meeting will be December 5th, but place is TBA. All at 10:00 start time. March 21st Spring meeting in LeGrand. 1:00.
Horse Fair (April 9, 10, 11) We have been informed that they have someone lined up to do the harness demo, so our club will not need anyone to do that. We will need to find out at the March meeting, who is going to bring what vehicles for display.
Amy Galloway has offered to be the club’s historian. Nick is going to check with Craig Moon to see if this is okay with him.
Carol passed out disclaimer of liability forms to those at the meeting that are going to be hosting a drive. Also some membership applications for possible new members were passed out.
Next board meeting will be February 21st at Grandma Max’s, Altoona at 1:00.
MIDA Board Meeting February, 28, 2010..(postponed from 2-21-2010) at Grandma Max's, Altoona
Max called the meeting to order at 2:04. Five board members were present.
Carol passed out the final list of all paid members and ads. We are down a few memberships but gained ads.
The horse fair was again discussed. It was asked if we were going to do anything in the pavilion. It was decided that there wasn’t enough interest from club members, so would not try to do this year. Economy and gas prices are a factor. We will need to get a count at the March membership meeting, who is going to bring what vehicles.
We discussed some more options of things to do during the winter months. It was suggested that perhaps we could rent the Gilman Saddle club indoor arena for an activity. It was suggested to see if Wes Licht would be interested in doing a colt starting demo. Will bring it up to the club for vote.
Our plaque showing original members and deceased members is full. We discussed how to continue it. Carol made motion and Julie seconded that we will check with the person in Oskaloosa that did the original one to see how we can proceed. It was discussed rather to get hanging additions or a whole new plaque to continue. Carol suggested that a whole new plaque with the club logo might look better. Julie will go to Oskaloosa and get prices.
Meeting adjourned at 3:00.
Carol Kaisand
Secretary-Treasurer.
