A little Mid-Iowa Driving Association History

The first meeting on record for the Mid-Iowa Driving Association was held February 3, 1985.  It took place at the Ridge Riders Saddle Club in Toledo, Iowa.  Of the people attending, the following officers were elected:

    President- Brad McKee

    Vice President- Frank Hollopeter

    Secretary-Treasurer-Shirley Anderson

    Photographer- Durella Meyer

    Newsletter Editor- Shirley Anderson

Board members for a 2 year term- Bob Casto and Gerald Edge

Board member for 1 year term-Cliff Henderson

It was decided that the purpose of the club would be to promote all breeds and types of driving and to participate in an organized manner in driving events.  This Association was formed with the following objects in mind:

1.) promote fellowship amongst the members by having well planned meetings and driving demonstrations with informative programs related to animal drawn vehicles along with the science, are and customs of driving animals,

2.) promote the collection and restoration of animal drawn equipment,

3.) promote the usefulness and acknowledge the past importance of animals driven for work, pleasure and transportation for their contribution to our cultural, social and economic history,

4.) recognize the publications and literature available on carriages and driving and contribute articles of interest for publication,

5.) assist fellow members with information on where they can find items needed such as vehicles, equipment, supplies and repairs,

6.) to support and assist regional and National groups of like aim,

7.) promote to the public the art of driving animals for work and pleasure by participation in the parades, exhibitions, shows, contest, driving meets, displays and performances.

The name Mid Iowa Driving Association was chosen.  It was decided to conduct spring and fall membership meetings to be held in a hall or restaurant.  Other meetings could be held at the drives if needed.  Board meetings can be held in members’ homes.

It was decided that the newly elected officers would serve until the fall 1986 meeting, when elections would take place.
